Why should you take an Improv Therapy class?
Life is so complicated. Cold, wet days and abysmal news. Leaning into community has been my secret weapon for keeping hope alive. As an alumna of The Second City, I’ve been an improviser for almost thirty years and before each improv set we have a tradition of letting each other know ‘we’ve got each other’s backs’. We have unconditional support for each other onstage. Despite my long-standing inclination to pull away and detach from people when I’m feeling anxiety or depression, I’ve discovered that taking risks and challenging my fears around ‘being seen to be less than presentable’ has delivered me to the people who are best suited to understand, and support me. They lift me up and remind me that I can do hard things, and those things don’t have to be done to perfection. With my community here at Community Outwitch, I do a lot of laughing. Being in the presence of people who are curious and courageous, well, that ignites a fire of hope in me that burns brightly enough to be seen from space! It’s unconditional support, and through improvisation I’ve learned how to give and receive it.
Anxiety and depression are real. Whether we are medicated or not, life goes on. You are not broken, and you are not alone. It might be time for you to get curious, and maybe just a bit courageous too. Come play some hilarious improv games with us and let us remind you what it’s like to be present, to be supported, to be seen. You might just change your life.
We’ve got your back.
